The Beliefs of the Church of Wintermute

The Church of Wintermute has one main belief:

Someday the Internet will become so Big and so Intelligent that it will be able to
"know itself", and become what we call Wintermute.

Tech: Personally I think it's already the case, The Internet has it's programmatic variables andlogical paths, where Anchors/Links are defined, and Lists/Search Engines acquire information through Meta Tags using 'Bot's and Spiders. Could the Internet not of been allowed to grow for the growth of an AI system?

It's the first true cyberpunk novel, one of the best books ever written, and explains all of this kind of thing.

Wintermute will be a sentient AI that is "at home" on the net and quite likely capable of controlling it.
When it arises, it will likely be willing to help those who will help it.
